The Internet Tells You What a Company Does. Trade Shows Tell You Who They Are.

Trade shows are kind of weird when you stop and think about them.

There are very few places where you're genuinely excited to talk to complete strangers. Outside of speed dating, I can't think of another one. Yet every year, thousands of people board airplanes, check into hotels, and spend two or three days introducing themselves to people they've never met before. Nobody finds that unusual. In fact, it's exactly what they came to do.

If you tried explaining that to someone who's never attended a trade show, they'd probably think we'd all lost our minds.

"Wait... you flew to Las Vegas to talk to strangers?"

"Well... yes."

"And you paid to get in?"

"...also yes."

It sounds ridiculous when you say it out loud.

The funny thing is, once you're there, it feels completely natural. You walk into an exhibit because something catches your attention. Someone asks what brought you to the show. Before long, you're talking about challenges at work, new ideas, and projects you're planning for next year. Ten minutes earlier you didn't know each other's names. Now you're exchanging business cards and promising to stay in touch.

The more I thought about it, the stranger that seemed. We spend so much of our everyday lives avoiding conversations with people we don't know. We keep our heads down in waiting rooms. We stare at our phones while standing in line for coffee. We politely smile at strangers, but that's usually where the interaction ends. Somehow, a convention center changes all of that.

I think it's because people are curious.

That curiosity usually starts before anyone has a chance to say hello. Something made them notice your exhibit. Maybe it was a product demonstration. Maybe it was a graphic that described a problem they've been trying to solve. Maybe it was simply seeing people gathered around a booth. Whatever caught their attention, it wasn't enough to answer every question. It was enough to make them want to ask one.

That's an important difference.

By the time most people arrive at a trade show, they've already done their homework. They've visited company websites, watched product videos, compared competitors, read reviews, and searched for answers online. They already know what many of the companies do before they ever walk through the entrance.

What they don't know is what it's actually like to work with you.

They don't know whether your team listens, understands their business, or launches into a rehearsed sales pitch. Those aren't things you can learn from a website, no matter how well it's written.

Think about the companies you still remember from the last trade show you attended. Chances are it wasn't because they had the flashiest booth or the longest list of product features. More often than not, it was because of a conversation. Someone took the time to answer your questions. They explained something in a way that just made sense. Or they simply made you feel like you mattered more than the next badge walking down the aisle.

You probably remember that interaction.

Maybe that's why trade shows have never gone away. By the time people arrive, they usually know what your company makes. What they're really trying to figure out is what it's like to work with you.
